Hiring a remote sales team: Philippines vs South Africa vs Latin America
Three regions dominate offshore sales hiring for US companies. They differ sharply on accent, time zone, cost, depth and management culture. A practical comparison for revenue leaders choosing a hub.
US revenue leaders choosing where to build an offshore sales team usually shortlist three regions. Each is a good answer to a different question.
The comparison
| Factor | South Africa | Philippines | Latin America (Mexico, Colombia, Argentina) |
|---|---|---|---|
| English | Native, neutral accent | Fluent, US-influenced accent | Fluent to strong, varies by country |
| US time-zone overlap | East Coast morning–afternoon (UTC+2) | West Coast and evenings (UTC+8); night shifts for East Coast | Near-full overlap with US Central/Eastern |
| Outbound sales depth | Deep: large BPO sector, strong B2B sales culture | Strong in inbound and support; outbound SDR talent thinner | Growing fast; strong in Spanish-language markets |
| Fully loaded cost vs US | ~60–70% lower | ~65–75% lower | ~50–60% lower |
| Management culture | Direct, Western, autonomous | Service-oriented, process-driven | Relationship-driven, varies by country |
| Best for | SDR/BDR, account management, CS, finance | Support, operations, onboarding, inside sales | Bilingual selling into Hispanic US markets and LatAm |
The decision rule
- Selling to US B2B buyers on the phone and by email, with relevance and rapport doing the work: South Africa first.
- High-volume inbound, support, order operations, after-hours and the US West Coast: Philippines first.
- Spanish-language markets or near-100% time-zone overlap at a modest premium: Latin America.
Most mature programs blend two. A SaaS company in Chicago might run SDRs from Cape Town and support from Manila; a Miami fintech might add Colombian seats for Hispanic customers.
What matters more than the region
The region sets the ceiling; management sets the result. A working team lead inside the pod, daily coaching from AI call scoring, weekly KPI reporting and an executive accountable for the number produce a good team in any of these countries. Without those, you get a cheap team in any of these countries.
